Foxridge Community Garden Update

By Martha Riley and Kyle Arnold

The community garden is winding down for the winter with fall cleanup having taken place on October 16th.  Many thanks to all our renters and volunteers for an active and successful garden season.  We were delighted to receive a Neighborhood Engagement Grant from the City of Centennial that supported our Volunteer Appreciation Event held in September.  Many thanks to the City!

Thanks also to Kyle Arnold from Troop 373 for his leadership in October that resulted in more garden improvement.   Kyle did a great job collaborating, planning, designing, and leading the work for his Eagle Scout project.  Kyle wrote the following:

Hi everyone! My name is Kyle Arnold and I recently completed a service project for the community garden for my Eagle Scout rank. A group of dedicated volunteers helped in building and filling three half-sized planter boxes, replacing an unsafe railroad tie, creating a shade sail system over the sandbox, and constructing three wood trellises. Thanks to Home Depot and Lowe’s donations, the materials required were discounted and donated. Thank you especially to Troop 373 for their help in the form of expert advice and hardworking youth volunteers and adults.

The boxes will allow people to rent half boxes instead of whole boxes, granting more flexibility for everyone. The shade system is perfect for hot days but also easy to take down in case of sudden bad weather and our harsh winters. The trellises are strong enough to hold tomato plants that have bent trellises in the past.

Many thanks to Foxridge Community Garden for collaborating with me on this project and for offering the use of wheelbarrows, tools, lumber, and organic soil. Troop 373’s help will not end with this project. In fact, many Eagle Scout prospects in this troop are interested in more service to benefit the garden and surrounding community.
